On this page I want to share my journey of growing the Wollemi Pine (Wollemia Nobilis). The Wollemi Pine is one of the oldest and rarest trees in the world. There are fewer than 100 adult Wollemi Pine trees left in nature. Believed to have been extinct until found in 1994 by David Noble in a small grove of living trees in a remote rainforest canyon of the Greater Blue Mountains. Another fun fact, the Wollemi Pine is not an actual pine, but a part of an ancient conifer family Araucariaceae. Araucariaceae has 3 genera, Araucaria, Agathis, and Wollemia. Of all these 3 genera, I have found that Wollemi Pine seeds are most similar to Agathis Australis (Kauri Tree). The Kauri seeds are a slight bit rounder and have a single wing attached, but otherwise you can see the resemblance. The initial cotyledon look very similar. Kauri and Wollemi Pine both lived when dinosaurs existed. I will show this in the Kauri blog. Below I will show my learnings with Wollemi Pine seed germination, and growth progress.
Below are what the seeds should look like. BEWARE OF SCAMMERs. I was actually scammed quite a bit of money from an eBay seller, and unfortunately PayPal and eBay would not help me. Please do not spend a bunch of money until you can determine the seeds are legitimate. This is my Wollemi Pine at about 1 month of growth. Behold Tethys (named after the ocean above Gandwana when Wollemi Pines first existed 200 million years ago):
